Teachers’ Pension Scheme DEFENDING YOUR PENSION

This information is for members working in the independent sector who are in Teachers’ Pension scheme and where it is under threat.

If you are in the TPS, but there has been no mention of leaving, take no action. Do not initiate, or entertain, any conversation on pensions as it could encourage your employer in thinking that staff are open to leaving the TPS. It is useful to be alive to the issue, so please read the information, so that you are ready if formal consultation is ever instigated.

Act now to defend the TPS in your workplace

We are immensely proud of the courageous stance taken by many of our members in the independent sector to defend their pensions.

NEU members in over 60 independent schools have successfully defeated their employer’s proposals to deprive them of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.

Members have learnt that success comes from 1. A strong collective union response 2. Acting early 3. The leverage of the threat of industrial action.

Others have learnt the hard way, that action cannot be left until the end of the consultation period. Many employers are not engaging in Consultation on the TPS as an open-minded exercise but, as a tick box exercise on the road to leaving. It has been an eye-opener for loyal staff that their employer has readily used the draconian practice of fire and rehire against them.

You can learn from your colleagues’ experiences. You can influence the outcome. You can defeat the proposal to leave the TPS altogether, or secure improvements to the alternative.

Building on members’ experience, we have put together these resources to help you.

Thank you for all that you do for your colleagues and the union. We wish you every success.

Yours sincerely
